A Christmas Tree Approach to Test Automation

Egbert Bouman

17.00-17:45, Wednesday 9th October

Test Automation can be applied across various levels of the technology stack. While Mike Cohn’s Test Automation Pyramid is a well-known model that facilitates discussions and decision-making in this domain, our knowledge has evolved significantly since its introduction. Innovative concepts such as Contract-Based Testing, PACT, and Trophy Testing have enhanced our comprehension and expanded our options for achieving a balanced approach to test automation. Additionally, advancements in tooling for mocking, rapid environment setup, and data configuration contribute to the overall improvement.

These supporting elements enable fast feedback, shift-left and shift-down, and help in mitigating risks at the earliest stages, ideally within a ‘zero-touch’ automated build/validate/test/deploy pipeline.

In this presentation, Egbert will introduce the Christmas Tree model as a more relevant and practical alternative to the Pyramid model. Participants will gain insights into how this model can shape a cutting-edge automation strategy. Moreover, the presentation will showcase how current tools in the market can translate this strategy into reality.

This session aims to provide a refined understanding of Test Automation concepts, utilizing the Christmas Tree model as a valuable guide to transforming automated testing into a sustainable success.

Whether you are a stakeholder, responsible manager, team lead, or even a script developer with a broader perspective, do not miss this presentation if you want to navigate through potential pitfalls and maximize the benefits.
