You Can’t Make an Omelette without Breaking the Egg

Maryam Umar

15:45-16:45 Thursday 10th October

Everyone likes a good omelette. But not everyone enjoys the process of making one. Sometimes you don’t have the right vegetable or the right cheese or good eggs. However, a fluffy omelette with good fillings is what we all want to eat. Similarly, we want the entire engineering team to take ownership of quality. But we are a little unsure of the right ingredients needed to reach this goal.

This talk will focus on what we can do today to make quality a real part of the SDLC.

I will share the challenges of modeling teams to get closer to whole team ownership of quality. This will include scaling technical capabilities as well as understanding emotional attachment to the test code and how we can go towards a true quality mindset for the future of engineering products.

Test Engineering Manager - Booking.com, UK

I am originally from Pakistan and moved to London 18 years ago. I learnt my ABC on a Commodore 64 and found computers interesting ‘gadgets’ to work with since. If life had worked out the way I wished it to, I would have either studied Mathematics or done a PHD in Software testing by now. I started as a QA test engineer in the finance and mobile industry. After transitioning to the eCommerce sector, I performed QA in various capacities for online restaurant and travel services. As I have transitioned in my career, I have found that paying special attention to team dynamics, and ensuring engineers are in roles which give them a sense of purpose, is essential for high performing teams. Aside from work, you will find me speaking or attending conferences and talking about mentoring/coaching and empowering people. I enjoy green spaces and love gardening. I also travel frequently and enjoy baking
