Track Talk T11

Automating Bias

Dermot Canniffe

13.45-14.30 CEST Tuesday 18th October

We often say that automating processes and tests takes away the repetitive grind of testing practice, allowing QA Engineers to apply their skill and experience in more meaningful ways.

However, every human experiences implicit cognitive biases and it’s possible to encode some of these biases into the automation that we create, which can lead to very bad outcomes for software. In this talk, we will cover some key biases that automation engineers may inadvertently include in their routines, and ways that we can mitigate the risk of cognitive bias.

Session Speaker

Dermot Canniffe

Senior Solutions Engineer - SmartBear, Ireland

Dermot has been working in various roles in software development since 2001, and will presumably continue until someone stops him. He can often be found expounding the virtues of collaboration and automation to anyone who stands still long enough. He currently works for SmartBear who decided to pay him to do this, as well as being a Solutions Engineer supporting customers during their pre-sales process.
