It’s not Automagic: The 3 Steps to Real Value from Automation

Martin Gijsen

12:00-12:45 CEST Tuesday 18th October

Some are told that success with automation in testing just depends on selecting the right tool. Others believe that success depends on too many unpredictable factors. And it does depend on many factors, not just on the tool. But there is nothing mysterious or mystical about automation success. From many years of experience, it’s clear that three steps will lead you there, for a single team or for a whole organization:

  1. Goal: Identify and share the business-oriented goal for your automation.
  2. Vision: Consider the known relevant questions, and compose a vision based on the answers for your context. These questions are collected in the freely available PUPPET model.
  3. Roadmap: Create a roadmap consisting of the steps that will realize the vision and implement it.

While challenges still can and probably will pop up during the implementation, that should not be because something important was overlooked! This talk will use many practical examples from my personal experiences to illustrate the various points.
