Deep Dive DD3

Automate Smarter, not Harder

Willem Keesman

*FULLY BOOKED*
16.00-17.45, Wednesday 9th October

You are part of a new DevOps team working for the infamous KafkaCorp, testing is mostly done ad hoc and there is no test automation strategy in place. You have inherited an application landscape and the test automation set that comes along with it. There are many tests present and we mean MANY. The effectiveness of these tests is not measured. You are not sure which risks are covered by the tests and what these tests tell about the quality of the software. Time to get to work!

Let’s start from different perspective, instead of building a dream world from scratch we begin with a nightmare. The metaphor for our test set is a baseplate full of multi-colored LEGO bricks in all shapes and sizes. Not structured at all, hard to work with. Will we be able to change this into something us automation engineers can be proud of? Challenge accepted!

In the first round, we start by taking a step back; “What is the purpose of this automation set?” “Which risks are covered by it?” Let’s start trimming our tests by removing the unnecessary bricks.

Next up, we introduce new bricks with different colors and shapes, symbolizing new test techniques which can be used to breathe some fresh air into our slumbering tests.

The final round, things are looking a lot brighter ! Let’s see how we can ensure it stays this way. By introducing Monitoring and looking at the Traceability of our tests, we build in safeguards to prevent the test set from turning into it’s nightmare state once again. We add new colored LEGO bricks and smaller sub baseplates to categorize and link the tests to the functionalities in the applications.

Look at this structured baseplate! Well done, your automated tests are now smart.

Please note this is a 90 minute Deep Dive, with a brief break during the session.

Session Speaker

Practice lead Auto|Q - Ordina Noord a Sopra Steria company, Netherlands

Can’t wait to share my experience and passion for our test craft with a larger audience. Hosted some workshops and internal events for smaller groups thus far and I am very excited to take it to the next level. EuroSTAR and AutomationSTAR were the highlights of 2023 for me, experienced a lot of positive energy and made new friends in the testing community. Being able to actively contribute to such events would be a privilege. Apart from testing I like to ride rollercoasters, watch horror films and play RPG games. Every once in a while I escape to remote locations and go for long walks in order to reset my brain.

Test Lead - CJIB, Netherlands

Last year I attended EuroSTAR and AutomationSTAR for the first time. These were inspiring conferences for me, I gained many new insights and met valuable contacts. I was impressed by the atmosphere and active community. This year I would like to contribute by sharing knowledge and experience myself. I get energy from working with people and coming up with new, better ideas together. I have experience in organizing test community meetings and hosting workshops in my own organization. It would be an honor for me to do this at AutomationSTAR.
