Keynote K2

Future of Test Automation with AI

Jonathon Wright

08:30-09:30, Thursday 10th October

As testers stand on the brink of a new automation frontier, Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to revolutionize the world of test automation. Today’s systems under test are more complex than ever, and traditional tooling and approaches are no longer sufficient to keep up with the speed of AI engineering & development practices. Generative AI is set to redefine how testers approach automation by introducing intelligent testing AI agents, these copilots capable of learning, adapting, and optimizing test harnesses far beyond human capabilities.

In this talk, Jonathon will explore how AI is revolutionizing test automation showcasing his recent collaboration with Jason Arbon on how test generation, maintenance and execution is possible through prompt threading. These next generation AI-Augmented driven capabilities can identify patterns in code, predict potential faults, and even simulate abstract human behaviors through Visualization of Thought (VoT) powered by Large Action Models (LAMs). LAMs will build on 50 years of test automation from manual-driven test creation to autonomous, continuous adaptive testing, where systems self-correct and evolve with self-aware test impact.

However, while AI brings extraordinary potential, it is not without limitations. The complexities of AI models themselves (i.e., hallucinations) require GATED.AI approach to validation and verification for AI-Infused systems, introducing fresh challenges for the testing industry. As AI integrates deeper into testing, we must address the crucial role of testers-in-the-loop (TiTL). Despite AI powered test automation, the tester’s critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving will remain indispensable in ensuring complex systems of systems behave as intended.

The future of test automation will be a collaboration between human intelligence and machine learning. AI won’t replace testers—it will augment their capabilities, enabling faster, more reliable automation. As we navigate this transition, it’s essential to harness AI’s power responsibly, ensuring that the systems we build are safe and reliable (EU AI Act).

What you will Learn

  1. AI-Agents for Intelligent Software Automation: AI is set to transform test automation by introducing intelligent testing agents that can learn, adapt, and optimize test processes beyond human capabilities
  2. Unlocking Large Automation Models: Building on next generation technologies such as Large Action Models (LAMs) and Visualization of Thought (VoT) which will make scripting redundant as cognitive vision and Large Vision Models (LLaVa) will reduce need to identify testable objects ever again!
  3. Collaboration Between AI and Testers (Testers-in-the-loop): Despite AI's advancements, the role of technical testers remains crucial. Tester Copilots work together with the tester to understand what they trying to test and suggest valuable code snippets (such as EAA violations within the underlying html code).
