Deep Dive DD1

Stop Writing API Tests – Steal Them From Your Browser!

Anaïs van Asselt

Booked Out
15:55 - 17:35, Monday 10th November CET

Maintaining backend API test coverage is a challenge—especially in startups with limited resources. At Choco, an AI-first company on a mission to reduce global food waste, we had to do more with less. The goal? Simplify and speed up API test creation without losing reliability.

What if you could automate test generation from real network traffic? Instead of manually writing tests and asserting on complex responses, imagine capturing API calls from your browser and transforming them into structured, reusable test scripts in seconds.

In this talk, I’ll introduce a scalable API test automation solution that leverages K6, Nx generators, OpenAI, and TypeScript to automate GraphQL test creation. While built on these tools, the core approach is framework-agnostic, making it adaptable to any test automation setup.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

* A reusable API test automation framework
Learn how to structure API tests using an architecture that supports both API and performance testing while ensuring reusability across environments.

* How to auto-generate API tests from network calls
Watch a live demo where tests are generated from a browser by capturing network calls, extracting GraphQL queries, and converting them into structured API tests. After the demo, we’ll break down the solution step by step, covering AI-driven test generation, automation, and structured scripting, reinforced with code snippets for a hands-on learning experience.

* Balancing AI and scripting for maintainability
AI is powerful, but not always the best solution. Learn when to leverage AI for automation and when scripting ensures better reliability. We’ll explore handling nested GraphQL queries, refining AI-generated test scripts, and why validating AI output is essential.

This talk is for engineers, testers, and automation enthusiasts looking to scale API testing, reduce manual effort, and integrate AI into their automation strategies.

What you will Learn

  1. Building a reusable, multi purpose API test automation framework. Learn how to design a scalable, maintainable API test framework that adapts to different environments and testing needs. This approach ensures efficiency and reusability, reducing the overhead of maintaining separate test suites for various scenarios.
  2. Auto-generating API Tests from network calls. Watch a live demo showcasing how to extract GraphQL queries from .HAR files and transform them into structured, reusable test scripts. You’ll gain insights into the scripting techniques, tools, and automation strategies that make this process seamless.
  3. AI is powerful, but not a silver bullet. Understand when AI enhances test automation and where scripting is more reliable. This session will break down real-world experiences, including the challenges of AI-generated test scripts and how to refine them for accuracy and maintainability.
