Half Day Tutorial G

Visual Regression Testing: A Practical Guide

Tomasz Klepacki

Booked Out
09:00 - 12:30, Monday Nov 10th CET

This workshop is a hands-on introduction to visual regression testing—a key method for keeping user interfaces (UI) consistent and stable in software development. By comparing screenshots before and after updates, participants will learn how to spot and fix visual inconsistencies.

We’ll start with the basics, covering why visual regression testing matters. It helps catch subtle UI changes, increases confidence in updates, and automates repetitive checks. We’ll also look at common challenges, like false positives from minor pixel shifts or dynamic content that changes between tests.

The workshop will introduce essential tools for visual regression testing. We’ll cover Visual Regression Tracker, a platform for managing and comparing test results; Playwright, which offers strong testing features, including image comparisons; and Cypress, a widely used testing framework that supports visual testing with extensions.

To improve test reliability, we’ll also explore mocking API responses. By using mocked data, participants will learn how to prevent issues caused by dynamic or real-time content, ensuring stable and consistent snapshots.

Through hands-on exercises, attendees will set up and use these tools. They’ll automate screenshots, troubleshoot dynamic content issues, and see how Visual Regression Tracker helps manage test results across different tools and frameworks. Participants will also get guidance on picking the right tool for their specific projects.

By the end of this workshop, attendees will know how to apply visual regression testing to maintain UI quality, improve software reliability, and deliver smooth user experiences.

The tutorial is designed to be hands-on, so it’s preferable for attendees to bring laptops. That said, it can also be followed in a less interactive way: participants may focus on the code as it is being implemented, or simply observe the workflow without coding along.

The dedicated repository and setup instructions are available here: https://github.com/tklepacki/automationstar-vrt. These are essential for anyone who wants to keep pace with the exercises.
