Track Talk T2

When Canary Meets Human.

Sonja Nesic

09:45 - 10:30, Tuesday11th November CET

We truly believed that we had the ultimate sales pitch for our engineering community when we started promoting our latest and greatest addition to our CI/CD tool box – automated canary deployments! “You can spend more time on innovation and let this shiny tool bring it to your customers in a safe and reliable way. No more postponing deployments because you’re busy or it’s a risky change. No need to be staring at dashboards or scratching your head if a rollback is needed – the tool takes care of everything for you and in doing so saves you 3h per week.” Sounds like THE dream right?

Turns out not. Even after a lot of promotion and showcasing the tool in action, the adoption was far from what we hoped for.

I’ll share why the perfect sales pitch can still prove useless when human nature and organisational culture kicks in and what we’re doing to turn this around.

Entered the world of software testing in 2014 and loving it ever since! Upon entering the world of software development, I learned quickly that in order to bring the right product to customers having people with the best tech knowledge with you is simply not enough - there is so much more to it. This is why besides learning new tools and techniques I always take the time to work on my communication and organisational skills as well as on my understanding of human interactions. Being one out of two testers supporting multiple team working in a high-risk business domain (online payments), I had the opportunity to take my coaching skills to a serious test and prove that being a tester doesn't have to be a lonely position in the organization.
