What They Don’t Tell You About AI in School

What is AI? What is AI for, and what are its goals? It would be easy to believe in 2025 that AI is unequivocally good and that everyone has always thought so. However, throughout history many diverse voices have asked critical questions about AI and other forms of technology, from Socrates to Ada Lovelace to Martin Luther King to Emily M. Bender. In this talk Felienne will take you through al alternate history of AI and what we can learn from over a century of tech criticism and discuss what we can learn from it for the current state of programming.

Felienne Hermans

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands

Felienne is a professor of Computer Science Education at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She also works as a high-school CS teacher one day a week at Open Schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer Felienne is the creator of the Hedy programming language, a gradual and multi-lingual programming language designed for teaching. She is the author of “The Programmer’s Brain“, a book that helps programmers understand how their brain works and how to use it more effectively. In 2021, Felienne was awarded the Dutch Prize for ICT research.
