Autonomous Testing: Introduce Testing Bots and Boost your Efficiency

Marcel Veselka

12:15-13:00, Tuesday 21st November

Traditional testing approaches are not keeping up with nowadays development velocity and are hard to scale. We believed that test automation would be the solution to this problem. This belief has not been fulfilled. . . or at least it achieved less than was expected.

Test automation tools are used almost everywhere these days, but testing is still too slow and hard to scale. Automation adoption requires strong technical skills that are hard to find and develop. Even within automation, we still do over 70% of activities manually, for example, scripting and maintenance are still manual activities. Is there a better solution? Could it be Autonomous Testing?

More and more signals coming from the market that support the idea. According to the latest Gartner report (July 2022), Autonomous Testing is the top innovation item on their Hype Cycle for Agile and DevOps 2022. They predict that it will be widely adopted within 2-5 years. The market has high expectations and is full of promises that Autonomous Testing is the next phase in the evolution of our approach to software testing. Plenty of test automation tools already have some (small) AI-based features. Using my research, I will share with you an overview of these features and where vendors are heading with these solutions.

But it is not only about feature building and vendor selection. We need to adjust our testing strategy. Therefore, I will give you a few tips on how to implement your own autonomous testing strategy and integrate it into your current approach.

I will share what Autonomous Testing is good for, where it’s not a good idea to use, how to combine it with traditional approaches and how to prepare for the future. This is all based on our own experience and research to develop and implement autonomous testing for our customers.
