Deep Dive DD4

Test Sharing : Why, When and How

Baubak Gandomi

09:45-11:30

Please note that this is a 90-minute Deep Dive, which includes a 30 minute break during the session.

Tests are not a disposable commodity. Nor are they the property of the testers. In this deep dive, I will show that tests can and should be used by more than the direct testers and developers of software. Testers embed deep knowledge in the tests that is hard for outsiders to absorb. This knowledge can be packaged and shared.

In large organisations tests need to be available and executable by interfacing services and teams. This could be teams such as DevOps and IT departments deploying the system, consulting and interfacing services. When you adopt the discipline of shareable tests, you start writing tests with a much higher quality, and scalability.

In this deep dive, I will show how your tests can be turned into shareable tests. I will also show the different methods we have adopted for sharing test projects between our teams. This involves aspects such as:

  • Test Design
  • Packaging
  • Distribution

This model has helped us validate large cross product migration projects.

I will also present our invention called TestBridging, that allows you to execute tests that are written in different, often incompatible technologies.

**ATTENDEE REQUIREMENTS**

The workshop will be using a repo: GitHub – adobe/test-as-a-product-demo: This project is a demo project prepresenting the Test As a Product concept. It shows how the bridgeService can be used in end to end testing.

We aim at running this project using Github Codespaces. This way I hope no-one needs to install anything (just an internet connection). You may want to create it on the main branch to prepare in advance, but I will be making time to do this.

For  those of you who prefer a more hands-on approach (or those you who have reached a Codespace limit) and who want to install everything locally, you will need:

  • Git access
  • Java >= 11
  • Node >= 16
  • Maven and access to an artefactory
  • NPM access

This project has been tested with the node versions:

  • v20.7.0
  • v18.16.1
  • v16.17.0 (Better avoid)

and Java versions:

  • Java 18
  • Java 11

Senior QE Architect - Adobe, France

After studies in Sweden and in Germany, I am now settled in France, where I work as a Senior Quality Architect at Adobe. This is a position I have been holding for the last 10 years. My work has revolved a lot around topics such as cross-product/teams testing, finding measurement methods for assessing functional and transactional coverage, upgrade and migration testing and continuous delivery methodologies. I am particularly interested in cases of software development that approach where the software we write allows us to express thoughts that cannot easily be expressed in words. When not solving Quality and Test related problems, I practice the martial art of Ninjutsu, love reading, and promote the ugliness of the world through my blog, Ugly City Guide.
